Cut PPF with your Mimaki plotter

CG-60SR / CG-130SR / CJV series
USB or serial, GP-GL and HP-GL

Mimaki cutters are common in shops that already do signage and wraps. The CG series accepts the same GP-GL and HP-GL output ULTRAFILMCUT produces, so a sign shop can add PPF without new hardware.

Read this first

Mimaki machines often ship configured for vinyl. Drop the cutting speed for paint protection film, since PPF is thicker and more elastic than sign vinyl and will drag at vinyl speeds.

Mimaki setup, step by step

  1. 01

    Set the command language

In the plotter menu set the interface to accept HP-GL or GP-GL, matching what you select in ULTRAFILMCUT Plotter Setup.

  2. 02

    Connect and confirm

Connect over USB or serial and confirm the machine reports ready before opening the software.

  3. 03

    Reduce speed for film

Start at roughly half your usual vinyl speed. Paint protection film stretches, and slow beats fast on curved panels.

  4. 04

Set pressure for eight mil film

Begin conservatively and raise pressure until the film separates cleanly. Cutting through the liner wastes both film and time.

  5. 05

    Verify on a real pattern

Cut a mirror or headlight pattern first. Small parts expose pressure problems without costing a full kit.

Write your working blade, force and speed numbers on tape and stick it to the machine. Settings are not portable between plotter brands, and the numbers you trust today are the ones you will forget next month.

Halve your usual vinyl speed. Film stretches where vinyl does not.

Cut the calibration square before every first job of the day and after any blade change. The film should part cleanly and the liner should show a light score without being cut through.

Mimaki questions

Yes. The CG-130SR works well with paint protection film once speed and pressure are set for film rather than vinyl.
